n America’s East Coast, in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia workers who o t h e r w i s e wouldn’t have the chance to escape poverty are learning the skills and gaining the experience they need for good-paying, rewarding and long-lasting jobs in health care and child care. Far across the country, in the Emerald City on the nation’s evergreen- lined Pacific Coast, women and minorities and newly arrived immigrants in Seattle are seizing the opportunity for a better life through apprenticeship programs that are unlocking the door to good wages and good benefits in the construction industry. In America’s heartland and Wisconsin’s traditional mainstay of manufacturing, Milwaukee residents who once had to rely upon government welfare are finding new skills and new hope with an innovative initiative that’s offering them the training and education to finally join the middle class.
