n March 9, 2001, leaders from the Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees International Union and 17 locals from around the country came together with employers and community representatives for a first-of-its-kind sectoral meeting to discuss training in the hospitality industry. Also attending were representatives from the International Union of Operating Engineers, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the California Labor Federation-AFL-CIO, the New Jersey AFL-CIO, and the Michigan Human Resources Development Institute, AFL-CIO. The meeting was convened by the AFL-CIO Working for America Institute and sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the U.S. Department of Labor. The meeting highlighted the extraordinary efforts of locals around the country engaged with their employers and community allies in addressing the needs of workers in the industry.
