Special Track For WIB Labor Reps

As part of the Institute's training and technical assistance programs for labor representatives who serve on state and local Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), we have planned a special training track at the November conference.

A preliminary agenda is now available for this track, including a union-only session on Sunday, November 9, and workshops on November 10 and 11. WIB labor representatives are also encouraged to attend the plenary sessions and other workshops that are being offered at the conference. Other "tracks" at the conference will focus on specific sectors (manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, transportation and the building trades) and topical areas (such as smart growth, public sector labor-management issues, serving immigrant workers, and the status of childcare workers).

The costs of attendance at our conferences and training sessions are allowable expenses under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). We have written to WIB Executive Directors asking for their cooperation in financially supporting the attendance of their labor representatives. We have been pleased that most of the attendees at past sessions have received financial support from their WIBs, but asking early can help. Fortunately, the new program year began in July, and funds should be available at the local level. To assist you in this request, we have prepared a sample request form for your use.

You should approach your board directly for support in attending the conference, and we ask that you contact the Regional Coordinator for your area if you are having difficulty with this process. Contact information for your Regional Coordinator is available in our staff directory).

Information on past training sessions is also available on our website. Regional training sessions were held in 2002 and our first national training conference was held in March 2003.
