Clean Energy

Union members are playing a leading role in helping develop alternative energy sources.

Every year, about 150 union members of IBEW Local 474 in Memphis, Tennessee, produce enough solar panels for Sharp Electronics to create about 64 megawatts of power.
More than 90 electrical workers from IBEW Local 357 in Las Vegas worked to get the largest solar photovoltaic power system in North America online.  The $100 million solar system provides power to Nellis Air Force Base.

Environmental Stewardship

Thousands of AFSCME members--like Urban Park Ranger Matthew Symons of New York City--work to protect our environment, manage our parks and recreation areas, and advocate for safe and healthy communities. They include biologists, environmental planners, park and watershed rangers, vehicle emissions testers, energy audit experts and other specialists, all dedicated to preserving our natural heritage.

Pennsylvania is fast becoming a world leader in the production of wind energy technology.

In Ebensburg, members of USW Local 2635-24 produce giant wind turbine blades out of carbon and glass fibers for the Spanish-owned company, Gamesa.
In Bucks County, USW members are building giant metal towers and gear boxes for wind turbines at a repurposed mill that was once part of U.S. Steel’s Fairless Works.
