Green Partnerships

Training and Education

The UA has created a Green Training Trailer that is touring the country to introduce UA apprentices, journeyman-level workers, and green building expo participants to renewable energy technologies and sustainable building concepts.

Union-management partnerships in the building and construction trades are addressing environmental issues in a number of creative ways. Some examples:

The Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers (BAC) and the International Masonry Institute (IMI) are developing partnerships with companies to produce advanced building materials so new buildings can meet higher standards for energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Members of the Painters and Allied Trades are working with the Finishing Contractors Association (FCA) to promote a greater understanding of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards that must be met for a building to receive LEED certification. The topic of LEED accreditation is built into the Painters and Allied Trades’ curriculum on green bid specifications.

Through the Mechanical Service Contractors of America’s online Green Room, contractors and United Association (UA) members are staying up to date on green business opportunities, energy auditing, and how to become an MSCA GreenStar contractor, an exclusive certification for companies who meet the highest standards for their commitment to environmental stewardship and training employees in green building methods.
